TU Incubator Business Plan Competition Winners Announced

Towson University Incubator’s 2016 Business Plan Competition named two winners at the May 4 finale event. Nine finalists spent the day pitching their business behind closed doors to our panel of judges, which included representation from TEDCO, Renegade Communications, and Carrollton Partners. Nearly four hours later, finalists delivered two minute lightning pitches to the public audience. Round 1 of Towson University Incubator’s 6th annual Business Plan Competition is officially complete! We received over 50 entries, a record high, and our Round 1 judges spent two weeks poring over executive summary submissions. For the second year in a row, the competition features both a ‘student-only’ category and ‘professional’ category. As we transition from spring to summer, we’ve had an influx of new members join TU Incubator via our most recent Business Plan Competition and the Department of Business & Economic Development’s Invest Maryland Challenge. Both competitions concluded in May and helped showcase some of the talent and innovation around the state. We warmly welcome the following new incubator members: Protenus Admit.me SeeFuture ShapeU Protenus aims to improve healthcare through intelligent tools and meaningful use of data. The company, launched in 2014, is the brainchild of two medical students who decided to turn their idea into a business that protects patient data by detecting electronic medical record access and addressing any unauthorized access and insider threats. Admit.me is an admissions community with tools to help students get admitted to their post-secondary school of choice. Applicants have the ability to connect with other applicants, current students, and alumni to glean expertise and input, interact socially, and ease the transition into the next stage of life. Admit.me started as high end admissions coaching but now has over 1200 users utilizing its platform and community. 5th Annual Business Plan Competition Winners

For our largest competition to date, we are very proud to announce the winners of the 2015 Business Plan Competition. SeeFuture, a career development platform for college students with mentoring, company training, and recruitment tools for employers built in, has been named the winner of the Professional category. New to this year’s competition was a Student category, with ShapeU being name the winner. ShapeU has built an online platform to connect social exercise and professional personal training. Our Judges The competition finale was held at Towson University’s Minnegan Room at Johnny Unitas Stadium. It began with eight finalists conducting private presentations. Q&A sessions with a panel of four judges followed. The 2015 competition’s judging panel consisted of: Stephen Auvil, Sr. VP Technology Transfer & Commercialization, TEDCO Bill Foxburrow, VP Commercial Banking, M&T Bank Rick Leimbach, Principal & CFO Advisor, Carrollton Partners Tim Watkins, President/CEO, Renegade Communications Prize Packages The prize packages are valued at approximately $20,000 and include a monetary prize, a 90-day Resident Membership to TU Incubator, a graphic design package by 99designs, and marketing services package courtesy of Odd Brain Creative. First Glimpse at 2015 Business Plan Competition Participants

Last year’s Business Plan Competition was met with great success, and we were proud to award incubator membership and prizes to Rehabtics, Tutela Bedside Technologies, and Zero Gravity Creations. This year’s competition is well underway, with the first round of competition coming to a close on February 23. Our team of judges surely has their work cut out with more than 40 executive summaries submitted in round 1! For the first time, our 5th annual competition features both a ‘professionals’ category as well as ‘student-only’ category open to students from local universities and colleges. Overall Participants Each year, we receive a variety of creative and innovative business ideas, and this year’s pool of participants do not disappoint. Among the executive summaries submitted are businesses ranging from makeup artistry services to production of affordable and accessible prosthetics for amputees. Business services, technology, consumer products, and healthcare IT, among others, are well represented fields in round 1 of the competition. Some participants even have an international focus for their businesses and hail from countries such as Israel and Pakistan. Student Participants With the addition of the ‘student-only’ category and continued success of the Student Launch Pad at Towson University, student entrepreneurs and innovators are in no short supply. 2014 TowsonGlobal Business Plan Competition Winners Announced

After months of preparation, workshops, and mentoring, TowsonGlobal awarded three winners of the 4th annual Business Plan Competition on May 1, 2014. The grand prize winner was Rehabtics, a Maryland based start-up developing a software system for physical rehabilitation using motion controlled video games for use in institutions and at home. In an unexpected twist to the competition, due to a last minute sponsorship and tough deliberations from the judges, TowsonGlobal was able to award second and third place winners – Tutela Bedside Technologies and Zero Gravity Creations, respectively. Tutela Bedside Technologies is an early stage medical device company dedicated to the development of interactive patient engagement software to help hospitals engage remote caregivers. Zero Gravity Creations, founded and operated by a Towson University alum, is a custom glass and metal fusion shop specializing in Magmabond technology. The finale of the competition was held at Towson University’s Minnegan Room at Johnny Unitas Stadium and began with the five finalists (the three award recipients previously mentioned as well as two Towson University undergraduate student teams, All Real Concepts and Random Repairs) conducting private presentations. This year’s Business Plan Competition attracted nearly 30 entries from innovative startups around the area. Fashion apparel, virtual biotechnology, and cloud-based management for university students were areas represented in the 2014 competition. With help from our judges, five finalists emerged from the competition to advance to round 2. All Real Concepts  New line of winter apparel utilizing NASA developed technology to deliver improved performance in frigid temperatures. Random Repairs  Self-service garage providing tools, machines, and lifts for customer use. Rehabtics  Maryland-based startup company developing a software system for physical rehabilitation using motion-controlled video games for use both in institutions and at home.
