Matt

With this post I am going to digress from my usual security focus to shine the light on the big Apple.  Apple recently released its newest version of the iPad.  I am a self-proclaimed tech junkie and try to stay up with all the latest gear.  A lot of people ask me if they should buy the new iPad, an upgrade from a previous version.  These are the times that try men’s souls.  The answer is, it depends.

For instance, I currently own an iPad 2 and have been very happy with it.  I have the base 16G model that is Wi-Fi only and I use it as an e-reader, movie viewer, gaming device (primarily for Words With Friends), and of course as an email reading device.  It definitely meets my needs but the newer model has me tempted.  Let’s look at the new features of the latest iPad.

  • 4G Support
Browse the web using blazing fast 4G LTE networks
  • Personal HotSpot
iPad can act as a personal Wi-Fi or Blutetooth hotspot for five devices
  • New Retina Diplay
The new display is beautiful, featuring 2048×1536 resolution
  • Dual core A5X chipset with quad-core graphics processor
    Faster than previous models
  • 5 Megapixel back facing camera with 1080P video
    Finally a usable camera
  • Pricing
$499 for base 16GB Wifi model.  Up to $829 for 64GB 4G model

The million-dollar question, Should you upgrade?

Here is my advice, depending on your unique situation:

  • You’re the Apple Fan.  You buy everything Apple.  You drink the Apple Kool-Aid.  You have already bought the new iPad in each color.  Money is no object to you.  No need to read on.
  • You have the original iPad. If you own the original iPad, now is a great time to upgrade.  The new iPad is a significant boost from the first iPad.  You will also be getting the front and rear cameras and a significant memory and processor boost.  You will notice the speed improvements and the new Retina display will be easy on the eyes.  The original iPad only had  256 MB or memory and the new one has 1 GB.  The only downside to upgrading is that you won’t get much money if you try and sell your original iPad.
  • If you own the iPad2 should you upgrade?  This is where it gets messy.   On the plus side the new iPad’s screen is stunning for e-books, movies and photos if you do a lot of that stuff.  The new camera is serviceable.  If you really need 4G, then go for it.  However, if you are happy with your iPad 2 and you don’t want to part with any money, there’s not much here that dramatically improves the basic capabilities of the device.  Unless you count dictation, there’s nothing new the iPad does that the iPad 2 doesn’t.  It just does things a little better.  I am in this boat and am going to stick with my iPad 2 until a newer version entices me.
  • If you are buying your first tablet what should you buy? First, consider a competing Android based tablet.  They are cheaper and offer a more open ecosystem.  Android tablets offer many of the same features and offer competitive products.  If you have settled on the iPad though, I would recommend purchasing an iPad 2 at a discounted price, if you can live without the new features.  The older models sells at a $100 discount or you can pick up one cheap on Craigslist or Ebay.  If you are low on budget you could save a lot of money by buying a used iPad2.  If you really need 4G or read a lot of e-books, then splurge for the latest and greatest model.  If you plan on using the back facing camera to shoot 1080p video or do a lot of photo editing, the new iPad is going to be your choice.  Just keep in mind you will be adding a few hundred dollars to the base price of the iPad for features you may not use or need.

Please leave your comments on what you have decided and if you think an upgrade is worth it.

Happy and Safe Computing!

If a person were buying an iPad for the 1st time or upgrading from the original iPad, I think you could justify going with the New iPad.

However, I don’t think it is worth the upgrade to go from an iPad 2 to the New iPad.
